How to Dive Off a Starting Block in Swimming

How to Dive Off a Starting Block in Swimming

Jump Starter

Having a good racing start is imperative in winning swimming races. A good dive can slice those all important seconds and miliseconds off your time, and could make the difference between winning and losing your race. Being right at the beginning of your race, a good racing start can give you a great psychological advantage, putting your competitors in the race on the back foot right from the starting gun. This article will describe the different racing starts available to choose from and help you to learn how to perform a racing dive off a starting block in swimming effectively.

There are three types of racing starts used in competitive swimming. Scientific studies have conflicting results as to which is the best racing start, so it is really down to individual preference and personal skill set as to which dive the swimmer chooses.

The first type of racing start is called the track start because it is closest to the type of racing start used in the track and field world, with one foot in front of the other. The toes of the front foot will be just curled over the front edge of the starting block. The hands need to be placed on the starting block with the fingers lightly gripping the edge. The swimmer keeps his or her weight on the front leg, uses the arms to pull down on the block and then flexes both knees to push off with the legs.

The second type of racing start is an adaptation of the track start and is called the Slingshot or Rear-Weighted Track Start. The set up is the same as in the track start. However, this time, the swimmer's weight needs to be on the back leg, which will flex down low in order to gain maximum spring off the block when performing the dive. As in the track start, the swimmer will use both legs to push off the starting block.

The third type of racing start is called the grab start and is different from the first two starts in that it has both feet together. The swimmer positions his feet 15-30cm apart with the toes curled over the edge of the starting block. The swimmer's centre of gravity should be as far forward as possible, without risking toppling into the water. The hands should grasp the front of the starting block, helping with stability. On hearing the starter's pistol, the hands pull downward and let go of the block, while at the same time the swimmer pushes off with both legs to perform the dive.

Whichever racing start you are doing the techniques are very similar:
Start by focusing on the front of the starting block. As you start the dive, move your head up and look at where you are aiming to enter the water. Target a point a little further than where you expect to make your entry, as you should be pushing yourself to achieve the maximum you possibly can right from the start of the race. When you make your jump, push as hard as you can with your hands off the starting blocks. Then quickly thrust your arms straight above your head with your hands together, aiming for that same point mentioned in point 1. - a little further than where you thought you could achieve. Naturally, try to jump as hard as you can. Studies of elite swimmers have shown that they typically take off at an angle of -5 degrees to 10 degrees, suggesting that a flat take-off profile would not be misguided. Your feet should be together with the toes pointed, to keep the dive streamlined and minimise drag. Your angle of entry into the water should be between 30 degrees and 40 degrees. Aim to dive under the water no more than 1 to 2 feet to minimise drag forces. A common mistake of those learning racing starts is to dive as much as double or triple that distance. Once you have dived in, if doing freestyle - also known as front crawl - you should aim to energetically kick your legs for about 5 to 10 yards or metres before surfacing and starting to propel your arms. In recent years, the dolphin kick has become the freestyle underwater kick of choice in competitive swimming, over the more traditional flutter kick.

Gary Jones Live Magic Lecture

Gary Jones Live Magic Lecture Video Clips.

www.world-of-magic.co.uk 1. Coins to Pocket - A coin repeatedly vanishes from the performer's hand and appears in many different pockets of the spectator. This is a real lesson in sleight-of-hand, audience management and misdirection. This routine will teach you how to load coins, cards or just about anything into people's pockets with ease! 2. Starter For 10 - You show an order pad (like the type used by waiting staff) and instantly the pad changes into a full deck of cards. This is a superb opener for the restaurant magician! Easily made up in less than one minute with items you probably have lying around. 3. 3Fly Plus - This is Gary's version of this classic. Three silver dollar coins are magically produced (each coin is handled by the spectators), two of the coins visually vanish at the fingertips, these are again produced from the spectator's ear and jacket; the other coin now visually vanishes and appears back in the pocket. All three coins now travel from one hand to the other one at the time and at the very fingertips, each coin now completely vanishes in a most magical way. You are now left 100% clean and reset for the next table!! 4. Sponge Ball Surprise - If you do the sponge balls then you will love Gary's solution to the 'multi ball' climax without the hassle of picking up the balls. This routine also teaches you how to make your volunteers the stars of the show with very clever spectator management and clever routining This routine is perfect for the table ...

Cold Frames and Hot Beds - Get a Jump on Spring

Cold Frames and Hot Beds - Get a Jump on Spring

Jump Starter

Cold frame greenhouses, cold frames, sun boxes, hotbeds -- call them what you will. All these small structures are designed to supply inexpensive and simple ways to extend your growing season. Once thought of as the poor man's greenhouse, these small growing boxes are a great addition to your garden, whether or not you have a full greenhouse. Let's have a look at the differences between these structures.

A cold frame, sometimes called a sun box, is probably the simplest one. It is an excellent place to acclimate greenhouse grown plants before you plant them out. This is basically a bottomless wooden box about 1 foot high either placed on the ground or sunk into the ground a few inches. The size is up to you, but make it a size so you can easily reach everything inside. If you want to plant directly into the frame, then add a 4 to 5 inch layer of topsoil and compost.

The most essential part of a cold frame is the slanting roof made of a transparent or semi-transparent material that will transmit heat from the sun. Old sash windows work well as covers, but you can use rigid or film plastic products. It is critical that the cover be movable and adjustable for ventilation. Both cold frames and sun boxes rely solely on the sun (that's why they're called sun boxes) for their heat so place them in a sunny sheltered spot, protected from wind.

In cold winter areas, use the cold frame for starting hardy annuals and early salad greens. It is also a good spot to harden off seedlings before they are planted in the garden. As the weather warms up, you can use it to root cuttings, to start tender annuals and even to germinate some seeds. Sow cold-weather crops in the frames in fall so you have a source of fresh greens and root crops in the winter months.

A hotbed is a cold frame with a source of heat inside it. It can be a thermostatically controlled electric heating cable, an incandescent light bulb or even manure! Any of these heating methods will keep plants from freezing even when outside temperatures dip to around 15F degrees.

To install a heating cable, dig out about 6 inches of soil and lay down the cable, looping it back and forth. Cover it with about 2 inches of sand and then 4 inches of topsoil. To use incandescent bulbs suspend eight 25 watt bulbs overhead, and connect them to a power source and a timer. To heat the hotbed with fresh manure, dig out an area below the frame to about 12 inches. Fill it with manure mixed with straw and then add 4 inches of soil on top. As the manure composts, it will emit heat!

A cold frame greenhouse is really a miniature greenhouse, and there are several kits on the market. They are generally taller than cold frames, standing up to 2 feet tall. They have a framework of wood, metal or rigid plastic, supporting sides of a semi-transparent polycarbonate plastic that is often double-walled for insulation. The roof is slanted and hinged, sometimes from the center so it can be accessed from either side. Durable, rigid and lightweight, they are easily moved around in the garden.

There are many different ways to extend the growing season and to provide a protected environment for your plants. Why not add a couple of cold frames or a cold frame greenhouse to your yard, and enjoy those early spring salads, fresh from your own garden

Mental Toughness - Starting Strong

The keys to getting a good start happen prior to taking the court. You need to be well rested, eat healthy meals, and have activity the day before to make for a good nights rest. Feel good about yourself by wearing clothes you feel confident and comfortable in. The process on picking out clothes should be done the night before.

Make sure to wake up with plenty of time to get dressed, eat a smart meal that is light but will last through that match. The meal must be enjoyed. Make sure that you have enough time to get to a match 20-30 minutes before it starts. Your drive must be relaxing with the focus and excitement based on the fun you will have on the court. All of these elements will improve your match results prior to your arrival.

Once you arrive the key is to warm yourself up. There is a chance a court may not be available so make sure to carry a few items to help. Carry a jump rope to warm up your entire body before the match, be careful to not overdue your pre-match warm-up.

Second have a sock racket in which you can use to warm up your shoulder and arm for serving. Last have surgical tubing to stretch your rotator cuff and arms. If you forget these items take a slow jog with side shuffle and grapevines, swing your racket in a relaxed serving motion, and pick a line to jump forward and back and side to side over.

Once you reach the court introduce yourself to your opponent(s) spin the racquet for serve, return, and sides. This will get the match started as soon as the warm-up concludes. Start the warm-up with short court first to get control of your shots. Use topspin and underspin on your shots up from the service line for 2 minutes. This will prevent the on court warm-up from being a ball chasing fest.

Once you are controlling your shots have one player back up to the baseline with the other starting at the net. The player on the baseline should hit controlled ground strokes as the net player is hitting controlled volley's back. After 2 minutes ask for some overheads and this will give the baseliner a chance to warm-up the lob. Take as many overheads as you need as this is good for your serve warm-up also. Once finished switch baseline and net positions and repeat. You should have 2 minutes left for serves.

Players should serve at slow speeds to warm-up and if you are making the practice serves continue to increase your speed until you start to miss and then slow it down. Practice placement over power with these serves. Each player should hit, catch the serve, and hit back this is not time to practice returns unless you are first to return and you feel confident in your serve placement. You and your opponent are now ready to start the match. If you followed all of the above you are well rested, your body is well nourished, and you are properly warmed-up to start.

Jump Start Your Career As a Professional Speaker

Jump Start Your Career As a Professional Speaker

Jump Starter

Professional speaking is an excellent career choice for those who want the flexibility of a freelance lifestyle along with the lucrative returns from a high-paying career. Are there any keys or secrets to "jump starting" a professional speaking career?

Whether you are using professional speaking as a strategy to boost an already successful career, or whether you are seeking to build a speaking business in its own right, you will want to keep in mind these three keys for jump starting your professional speaking career.

Your speaking career will really "take off" if you focus on knowing your audience, mastering your presentation skills, and marketing your speaking services effectively.

1. Know Your Audience

In speaking to any group of people, your goal is to inform, persuade or entertain them. To do this effectively you need to carefully consider who the audience is before you present to them. What is their background and level of experience? What are their interests, their likes and dislikes?

Learn as much about the audience as possible as this will directly influence what you decide to say and how you say it.

2. Master Your Presentation Skills

In order to become an "in demand" professional speaker, you must learn to truly master presentation skills. You can improve your presentation skills from personal coaching, or even from books and videos, and from being part of a speaking organization such as Toastmasters.

Don't forget that good preparation is always essential for professional speakers. Practice, practice, practice. Then practice some more. You should know your material by heart in order to ensure a good delivery, every time.

3. Marketing Your Speaking Services

If you want to grow your speaking business then you must arrange your marketing package like a professional. Hire a photographer to take a good photograph, preferably a headshot. Now use that photograph on your business cards, on a web site, and with your information sheet. Put together an attractive marketing package including some client testimonials and one or two video clips.

Also, don't turn down speaking engagements just because they are non-paying. When you are starting out - and even later on - speaking for free for charities or non-profit organizations will prove to be valuable in the end. It helps the organization and it also adds to your experience and gives you more client testimonials. These events are also an excellent opportunity for networking. And you might even make a little something from 'back of the room' sales of your books, tapes, workbooks and other materials.

If you really want to jump start your career as a professional speaker then remember these three essential components. They will truly make a strong impact on your audience.

Lose Fat Like a Pro Boxer With a Jump Rope Cardio Workout

Lose Fat Like a Pro Boxer With a Jump Rope Cardio Workout

Jump Starter

Tired of boring cardio routines? Running on the treadmill for 30 minutes is not my idea of fun. There are much better ways to get a great cardio workout in that are fast and super effective. That's by jumping rope. You probably remember doing it as a kid in school. Well let me tell you, it's not just for kids! Here's just a few reasons why you should pick up a jump rope and give it a try.

Dirt Cheap

Most cardio equipment can range from a few hundred dollars up to a few thousand. A jump rope on the other hand should cost you no more than . That's a pretty amazing deal for a piece of cardio equipment. You can pick one up from any sporting goods or fitness store. Some department stores may also have them in stock. You don't need to get the leather ones that boxers use. A cheap plastic one will work just as good. You can likely pick one of these ones up for a few dollars.

Use it Anywhere

A jump rope can be used anywhere. You can use them at home indoors and out. You can also take them to a local park or to the gym. Just toss it into your bag or purse and take it with you wherever you go. They are also great for sneaking in a quick cardio workout on your lunch break.

The only limitation is when using a jump rope indoors you need to make sure that the ceiling is high enough. The typical 8 or 9 foot ceiling won't be high enough unless you are really short. For home use you are better off jumping rope outdoors or in your garage.

Fast Workout

Until you've tried it, you won't believe how quickly a jump rope will get your heart pumping. You'll want to start off easy the first few times and limit yourself to very short workouts. Just 5 or 10 minutes will do it. Trust me, you'll be sweating buckets in that short amount of time!

Give jumping rope a try. It's a killer cardio workout that is fast, effective and inexpensive.

Never Jump To Conclusions

Never Jump To Conclusions

Jump Starter

Over the past, jumping to conclusions, especially the wrong ones, has cost me so much. Like when taking a test of some sort, they always say that your first answer is almost always the most correct. Often, when someone leaves me a brief message and I hear nothing else from that person my mind will start racing and I'll come to the wrong conclusion. If I had just trusted the universe will always provide for me then maybe I could have saved myself a lot of unnecessary grief.

I am the type of person that needs a pat on the back every once in awhile otherwise my mind will start creating a lot of bad situations. I know that a lot of other people suffer from this same dilemma. Instead of jumping to conclusions we should learn to trust the old saying that "No news is good news". How much failure has been caused by people jumping to the wrong conclusion?

I know of at least 2 jobs I have had that were lost because of me jumping to the wrong conclusion. When our kids are late getting home for the evening, parents a lot of times will starting jumping to the wrong conclusion. When our other half has gone out and they say they will be at the mall or something then they come home late or never go where they told us they were going, I know for a fact then when my wife does this I will always jump to the wrong conclusion which has caused a lot of fights that could have been avoided had I never jumped to the wrong conclusion.

My son last week paid for a service through some web site and now he is going to destroy everything because he has not heard anything from the person who was paid to do the work, it has only been 4 days. Last time this person disappeared for about a week was because his wife had a new baby during this time. Now my son should never have paid everything until the work had been completed which is something else I will address in another post in my Blog.

Why is that there are some people who never have this problem? I know some people that have plenty of patience to just let everything take its natural course rather than jumping to the wrong conclusion about things. I guess a lot of this can be attributed to how we are raised early in our lives. Maybe somebody needs to outline the right way to do things so that it can be given to all new parents when they have a child?

Dating After a Divorce - Starting New

Dating After a Divorce - Starting New

Jump Starter

Are you considering dating after divorce? Has it been only a few months since your divorce has been finalized, but you want to go and put yourself out there and date again? Or have you been told how important it is to date after divorce, but you're not sure you're ready to meet someone new?

Not every woman is prepared to date after a divorce after the same length of time. Some will jump back into the dating scene in a heartbeat, but many feel a need to spend some time alone first. Read on to see when you should begin to date after a divorce and how to get back on that dating horse.

Rediscover the Woman

For some women, marriage simply swallows them up and they disappear with the relationship. They lose all sense of who they are and, over time, come to take on the role that is expected of them as a wife, forgetting completely who they once were. Before you decide to put yourself back out there again, take some time to discover who you really are. You may be surprised by what you find.

What have you set aside these past years in order to be with your husband? What sacrifices have you made? This is the time to catch up with the woman you left behind.

Grieving Process

Few are the women who leave divorce court sincerely celebrating their newfound freedom. For most of us, this is a difficult and heartbreaking process. Not only have we lost the man we loved, but it's the death of that marital dream that also pains us.

Many of us have dozens of plans for our future together with our husband and to have that all destroyed can be hard to swallow.

Take the time to mourn the loss of your love and your dream.

Dating After a Divorce

It's often tempting to talk about our divorce when we start dating someone new. The topic of past relationships is brought up and before you know it, you're going on and on about how badly your ex treated you, or, worse still, you're going on and on about how much you miss him and still love him.

Whatever anger, pain or angst you need to get off your chest about your ex-husband, do it with your friends. Spend a nice long evening venting and saying everything you feel and think about this broken relationship. Then you can meet this new guy with something else to talk about.

Eager Beaver

If you've become accustomed to living with a man and you feel the need to re-enter a relationship quickly, you might be setting yourself up for another failed romance. Not only are you apt to fall for the first guy who is remotely husband material, but you'll be going out on the dating scene with a distinguishable air of desperation.

Take the time meet the man who'll truly make you happy instead of settling for someone who'll simply replace your ex. You'll be happier in the end and dating after divorce will be a success instead of another failure.
